Dear ANEA HILL Customer,
There are things about the pair of frames you are wearing, or the pair you are considering, that I have never fully said out loud. Not because I am keeping them from you, but because the details that matter most in building a brand are often the ones that happen far from any camera, any caption, or any product page. They are the ones that define luxury brand standards from the inside out.
The LVMH Certificate Program I have been working through has given me a new language for something I have always felt: luxury brand standards are not built in the moments people see. They are built in the ones they do not. This letter is my attempt to close that gap. To tell you what goes into what you are holding, not as a sales argument, but as a founder who thinks you deserve to know.
I want you to feel what I feel every time I see one of our frames on someone's face. That quiet confidence that comes from knowing it was made correctly. That it was made for you.
With intention,AshLee Williams
Founder, ANEA HILL
The Details You Never See
The material was chosen before the design existed.
Before a single frame was sketched, the decision to use Italian cellulose acetate was made. Not because it was the easiest material to source or the most cost-efficient to work with. Because it was the right one. It is plant-based. It deepens rather than fades. It warms to your skin over time in a way that makes a well-worn pair feel like it was made for you specifically, because in a very real sense, it was. The Estate you reach for on a Tuesday morning in year three is a different experience than it was on day one. Better, actually.

Luxury brand standards begin with material decisions that most customers will never consciously notice but will always unconsciously feel.
The production path was chosen over the profitable one.
When it came time to decide where ANEA HILL frames would be made, the answer was Japan, where eyewear craftsmanship has been refined for more than a century. That decision came with longer lead times, higher costs, and a supply chain that requires genuine relationship rather than transactional management.
It also came with something no cheaper alternative could offer: a standard. Each frame passes through more than 200 individual production steps. Each step is overseen by someone whose professional identity is built around getting it exactly right. That is not efficiency. That is luxury brand standards expressed through a production choice.
The fit was designed before the aesthetic.
Every frame at ANEA HILL was designed for smaller and medium face proportions first. The aesthetic followed the fit, not the other way around. Most eyewear brands design for a generalized face and hope for the best. The Huckle, the Lonestar, the frames in the Scallop Collection and the Nautical Collection were all drawn around a specific woman with a specific face. The adjustable ear bars exist because fit is not a feature. It is a standard.

The protection is built in, not applied on.
UV400 protection in every ANEA HILL lens is integrated into the lens material itself. Not applied as a surface coating that wears away with time and cleaning. This distinction is invisible to the eye and significant to the one behind it. It means the protection you have on day one is the same protection you have three years later. That is a luxury brand standard most people in eyewear do not bother to meet because the alternative is cheaper and harder to detect.
What You Cannot See But Always Feel
The program introduced a concept from Sephora that I have not been able to stop thinking about. Sephora reduced energy consumption by nearly twenty percent in a matter of months, not through a dramatic product or campaign change, but through hundreds of small operational decisions about lighting, air conditioning, packaging, and daily routines. The lesson was this: excellence rarely announces itself. It compounds.
That is the operational truth behind every ANEA HILL collection. The Burgundy Collection, the First Class Collection, and the Around the World Collection did not arrive at their standard through a single brilliant decision. They arrived through hundreds of smaller ones made consistently over time. The color that took four sampling rounds to get right. The hinge tension adjusted after a customer told us it felt slightly loose. The packaging reviewed because it could be better without diminishing the experience of opening it.
You feel those decisions without knowing they were made. That is what luxury brand standards look like from the inside.
What I Am Protecting So You Always Have It
The program used Dior and Moët Hennessy to make a point that reframed how I think about building ANEA HILL for the long term. Dior invests in the farmers and ecosystems that produce the flowers used in their perfumes. Moët Hennessy protects the soil and vineyards that make their wine possible. The lesson was not about environmental responsibility as a marketing exercise. It was about protecting the source of what makes the product exceptional. And it is one of the clearest expressions of luxury brand standards I have encountered in the entire program.
For ANEA HILL, the question became immediate and personal: what must still exist twenty years from now for this brand to remain what it is?
The answer is three things.
- Japanese eyewear craftsmanship. The artisans in Japan who have spent careers developing a standard that no automated production line can replicate. ANEA HILL depends on these relationships, and protecting them is not a sustainability checkbox. It is a business imperative and a human one.
- Italian cellulose acetate. The material that gives every ANEA HILL frame its depth, its warmth, and its longevity. The suppliers who produce it at the level we require are not interchangeable. Protecting those relationships means protecting the quality you hold in your hands.
- The design standard itself. The commitment to fit-forward design for smaller and medium face proportions, to small batch production, to the decision that luxury brand standards at ANEA HILL are not negotiable regardless of what it costs to maintain them. That standard is the brand. Protecting it is the work.
These are not things you will ever see on a product page. But they are the reason the Portofino feels the way it does. They are the reason the Earth Collection will look as considered in ten years as it does today. They are the reason I can write this letter with confidence rather than aspiration.

A Note on Where We Are Going
I am still learning. The program keeps returning to an idea I want to close with because it is the truest thing I can say about where ANEA HILL is right now.
Excellence is not a destination. It is a direction.
The Journey of Your Sunglasses page I want to build, the deeper craftsmanship documentation I want to create, the supplier relationships I want to strengthen and make more visible, none of these are finished. But the direction is set, and the luxury brand standards that will make them possible are already built into every frame we make.
You are wearing the result of hundreds of decisions you will never know about. I want you to feel every one of them.
For the full foundation this series is built on, The Future of Luxury Fashion: My LVMH Certificate Notes is where it began. And for a closer look at the fit philosophy behind every frame mentioned in this letter, Sunglasses for Small Faces: How to Find the Perfect Fit goes deeper on the design intention behind what you are wearing.
FAQs
What are luxury brand standards and how are they different from premium brand standards?
Luxury brand standards are the non-negotiable commitments built into every material, production, and design decision a brand makes, regardless of whether the customer can see them. They include the choice to use Italian cellulose acetate over injected plastic, to handcraft in Japan rather than a lower-cost facility, to integrate UV400 protection into the lens material rather than apply it as a surface coating, and to design for a specific face proportion rather than a generalized average. Premium brand standards may meet the customer's visible expectations. Luxury brand standards exceed them in ways the customer feels without always being able to articulate why.
How does ANEA HILL maintain luxury brand standards across every collection?
Every collection at ANEA HILL, from the Small Faces Collection to the Texas Collection, is built on the same material and production foundation: Italian cellulose acetate, Japanese handcrafting, UV400 protection integrated into the lens, and adjustable ear bars fitted by hand. The aesthetic varies by collection. The standard does not. Luxury brand standards at ANEA HILL are not a tier or a price point. They are the minimum, and they have been since the first frame.
Why does operational excellence matter in a luxury brand?
Because the details customers never see are exactly the ones they always feel. The packaging decision, the shipping standard, the supplier relationship, the production step that most brands would consider excessive for the price point. These are the decisions that compound over time into a brand experience that feels different without the customer being able to explain why. At ANEA HILL, operational excellence is not a department. It is a disposition, applied to every decision from the color of an acetate sheet to the tension of a hinge. That is what luxury brand standards require, and it is what we hold ourselves to.
